Types of Vaginal Discharge | Colors of Cervical Mucus – What does it means ?

We Women experience different types of Vaginal Discharge throughout our life and it is very important to be aware and understand What these Cervical Mucus Means through its color , because it tells us a lot about our Reproductive system’s health.
Every now and then we notice different types of discharge from Vagina, sometimes it totally normal to be wet down there as it represents healthy vagina or fertility /pregnancy/ ovulation but sometimes it indicates a problem/underlying health issues like Hormonal Imbalances or Sexually Transmitted Infection, mainly it depends on color and smell of cervical mucus. Sometimes it even indicates a cervical cancer.

In short, there are 9 Colors of Vaginal Discharge a female may experience throughout her Reproduction Journey.
1.White Vaginal Discharge –

Color : White / Cloudy
Texture : Creamy / Glue (School Glue)
Smell : [i] Without Smell [ii] With Smell
What does it Indicates : If the discharge contains no foul smell or odorless, it generally called as leukorrhea.
Its absolutely healthy to have this type of discharge throughout the monthly cycle, specially just after period ends. Its Vagina cleaning itself from any bacteria or semen to keep uterus clean.
On the other hand if these white discharge have foul smell, fishy smell it is an indication of Vaginal Indication and it requires medical attention.
2.Clear and Transparent Vaginal Discharge –

Color : Clear like water / Transparent
Texture : Stretchy / Wet Watery
Smell : No Smell
What does it Indicates : This type of discharge also called as Egg white Cervical mucus due to its consistency matching to egg whites.
It mainly indicates an Ovulation is nearby. Sometimes this discharge also indicates an early pregnancy varying on the time you notice it, if you know when you have ovulated then seeing this type of discharge after the end of ovulation might indicates start of pregnancy.
3.Pink Vaginal Discharge –

Color : Light Pink (Not Red)
Texture : Runny liquid (No lumps)
Smell : No Smell
What does it Indicates : Pink discharge is absolutely normal, generally it indicates an implantation bleeding or an ovulation or a cervical injury / vaginal irritation.
If its coming in the middle of your menstrual cycle it can be a hormonal imbalance or if its mixed with a slight tint of pink color, it may be an ovulation.
If it is coming nearby your regular period date i.e. around the end of menstrual cycle its can be either implantation bleeding or a start of your period.
4.Red Vaginal Discharge –

Color : Dark Red or Light Red
Texture : Watery or Clotty (though the reason behind the clots should be evaluted ,in some women clots are just dead tissues body is getting rid off.)
Smell : Bloody Smell – Strong smell but Not Rotten
What does it Indicates :
Well it indicates that You haven’t conceived this cycle & your body is expelling tissues and bacteria it no longer needs. The end of this cycle and start of a new cycle begins with bloody period.
5.Brown Vaginal Discharge –

Color : Rusty Brown / Brownish Tint Mucus / Dark Brown
Texture : Stretchy / Clots / Stringy / Watery
Smell : Smell like a Period or No Smell
What does it indicates :
Brown blood is widely experienced things by Women, every women must have experience this vaginal discharge at least once. There are number of reasons why one must be having this brown blood vaginal discharge.
It may indicate –

- Ovulation Spotting – If you experience this kind of discharge in mid cycle, there is a possibility ,you are having ovulation spotting. Note that – Sometimes your ovulation gets delayed and you can have this type of discharge even before 6-7 days before you expected your period and you mistakenly take it for implantation bleeding ,when its actually just a delayed ovulation.
- Hormonal Imbalance – Many times you just missed a period and all you to think about Pregnancy, when in actuality your body is having issues like hormonal imbalances or PCOS, even low Estrogen or Progesterone levels.
- Infection – If only accompanies with irritation of pelvic area, sensation of burning of vagina, lower back pain and foul smell. If you are seeing thus symptoms, its highly recommended to talk to your Doctor.
- Lochia – brown blood that comes out after giving birth, postpartum blood.
6.Yellow Vaginal Discharge –

Color : Light Yellow, Pale Yellow
Texture : Stingy / Mucus Texture
Smell : [i] Without Smell [ii] With Smell – Foul Odor
What Does it Indicates : If the yellow discharge is odorless and pale in color ,it may not indicate any trouble.
While if its itchy or having strong foul smell, it can be a signal of an vaginal infection / yeast infection and should be treated by doctor.
7.Green Vaginal Discharge –

Color : More like Yellowish – Greenish Tint
Texture : Glue like / Thick / Chunky
Smell : Unpleasant Smell
What Does it Indicates : It mainly indicates STD / STI – Sexually transmitted disease / Sexually Transmitted Infection like Trichomoniasis – very common sexually transmitted disease (STD), Gonorrhea, Chlamydia etc.
Should be evaluated and treated by doctor immediately.
8.Black Vaginal Discharge –

Color : Black / Dark Brown
Texture: May Contain Lumps ,Stringy Or Plain
Smell : Like Period But Not Strong
What Does It Indicates –
It Typically indicates old blood that’s taking extra time to leave the uterus. When the old blood from previous period starts coming out towards vagina, the oxygen in the body can make the blood black as it Oxidized.
You will notice this kind of black vaginal discharge either at the start / beginning of the period or at the end of the period.
9.Gray Vaginal Discharge –
Color : Gray Color
Texture: Slimy
Smell : Foul , Pungent Smell
What Does It Indicates – A Very Unhealthy discharge with smelly mucus it generally indicates Bacterial infection called Bacterial vaginosis (BV).
