4 Phases of Menstrual Cycle – Understanding Your Cycle Better

When it comes to menstrual cycle length , everything between day 21 to day 40 is considered normal.
But to have a better understanding of your period you should know that there are total 4 Phases of Your Menstrual Cycle.
And each phase plays a key role in our reproductive system, even a slight delayed or disturbance in one phase can cause a cycle to get messed up completely, which we called as missed period, irregular period or late period.
In this post you will get aware of your own cycle and can easily calculate in which phase you are , so that you can take your own care to have a better rhythm with your body.
Phase 1 :
Menstruation – [Day 1 – Day 5]
Your cycle is calculate from day 1 of your period.so before you know you have already entered in phase 1.
In this phase its confirmed that you haven’t conceived and hormone progesterone’s levels drops and your bleeding starts. You are basically shedding the thick uterine lining which your body was preparing for the upcoming fetus (baby).and a journey of new cycle begins from here onwards.
How to take better care of yourself in this phase ?
Obviously, You are bleeding and its not fun. Struggling with medium to intense abdominal cramps ,feeling tired so making yourself number 1 priority is what this phase needs the most.
Slow down and Take rest.
Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated.
For easing the cramps keep hot water bag ready and Eat Dark chocolate 🙂 , as study suggest it may help to reduce the pain.
Phase 2 :
The Follicular Phase – [Day 6 – Day 13]
A lot is happening in the follicular phase, as the name suggest your body is making multiple follicles (eggs) in ovaries.
From which one will prove its dominance over others and will get release from the ovary for a possible fertilization.
The body produces hormone Estrogen during this phase, which can cause higher energy levels, glowing skin and your sex drive may start rising.
You might notice increased vaginal discharge during this time.
How to take better care of yourself in this phase ?
This is the time for recovery from phase 1 and lots of self-care.
You are energized and feeling active, thanks to increase Estrogen levels , so its a great time to do Yoga, Meditation and light exercises.
Focus on healthy diet, consume Iron and Vitamin C as you have loss blood during phase 1.

Phase 3 –
Ovulation – [approximately around day 14]
Firstly, Ovulation on day 14 is very rare. Only a small percentage of women(around 10%) ovulate exactly on day14..
It depends on the length of your follicular phase, so ovulating from day 11 to day 26 is absolutely normal.
Ovulation on Day 21 and later considered as late ovulation but as far as you are still ovulating , its normal.
So this is the time You are most fertile in your cycle. Ovulation day and days leading up to ovulation are considered as the most fertile time(in total 6 days).
And if you are ttc (trying to conceive) its the time to have intercourse for a possible pregnancy and if trying to avoiding pregnancy, use protective measures.
In this phase you will have increased egg white consistency cervical mucus which is an indicator that your are most fertile.
How to take better care of yourself in this phase ?
If you are actively trying to get pregnant ,its the best time to have Intercourse for a successful fertilization.
Eat healthy, exercise, stay active and maintain a calm mind to promote your ability to get pregnant.
Phase 4 –
The Luteal Phase – [Day 15 – Day 28]
After you ovulated ,the egg has been released and waiting for the sperm to fertilized it.
Now there are 2 possibilities.
One is your egg got fertilized and is preparing itself for the implantation (burrowing deep inside uterus for 9 months journey) and second its not fertilized and traveling back in fallopian tube and as its traveling down ,it signals body to shed your endometrium lining (your next period) and your next period begins.
How to take better care of yourself in this phase ?
In the case of fertilization ,if you have conceived, you should take good care of your body, Avoid alcohol consumption as it can affect fertilized egg, do light yoga (butterfly ,leg up the wall etc.) to help implantation process.
Avoid straining your body too much ,don’t do heavy lifting.
and If you haven’t conceived, still you can take care of your body for upcoming period by eating healthy and maintaining an active life ( walking, exercising and healthy eating) for preparing your body for next cycle.
In both cases, hormone estrogen and progesterone are increasing your body and working together to either maintain a pregnancy or start a menstrual cycle.
Listen to your body and notice any early signs /symptoms to understand a possible outcome in this phase.
Being aware of your phase is such an amazing way to provide and fulfill needs of your body and its helpful to keep your reproductive system happy and healthy.
